In a recent update that surprisingly does have some historical accuracy to it,Assassin’s Creed: Valhallawill feature “rap battles” between characters.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhallais the newest installment in theAssassin’s Creedseries developed by Ubisoft and is set to release for current and next-gen consoles during the holiday season of 2020. Fans of the game are excited for many mechanics the game is planning to bring, such as being able tofight against Norse gods.

The game also plans to bring backold mechanics from pastAssassin’s Creedgames, such as the hidden switchblade, as well as introducing new ones to the series. One of the more modern features that Ubisoft unveiled is the ability to face off against NPCs in a lyrical battle of wits.
What is said to be a common practice during the age of the Vikings, “Flyting” is an interaction where Vikings exchange insults with each other with verses that use a poetic structure similar to their opponents.Viking rap battleswere mostly practiced in England and Scotland between the fifth and 16th centuries, even used as a way to entertain royalty such as James IV and James V.
In the game, flyting’s functions when someone throws an insult at theprotagonist, Eivor, and challenges them to a duel. Creative director Ashraf Ismail states that “Eivor will have to find a response. So you’ll have multiple choices in front of you, and you’ll have to find the right one that matches the insult, the one that has the right rhythm.”
Ismail goes on to say that players will be able to get something more than satisfaction out of it that benefits Eivor, but fans will have to wait for future updates to understand what that means. Perhaps with this update, Ubisoft wants to justify the old saying that the pen is mightier than the sword. With that said, it is always interesting to see how developers putminigames in popular videogames, such as cardgames and fishing. Ubisoft seems to be sprinkling a lot of extra details into the game to replicate the Viking’s lifestyle, and it will be exciting to see what else the developers will bring to the game to pay homage to Nordic culture.
