Based on theReachertrailer, the tone of the show will be a little bit on the lighthearted side while still having high stakes. Keep in mind this is just the trailer, so the show may actually end up being “darker” than anticipated. However, for right now, the show seems to stay heavy on the action with a little hint of comedic relief. The first season will adapt the first novel in theJack Reacherbook series,Killing Floor, which will be written by Primetime Emmy-nominated writer Nick Santora (Prison Break,Scorpion,Most Dangerous Game), who will also serve as both showrunner and executive producer.

Ritchson, who played Aquaman inSmallville, is taking over the role after it was previouslyplayed by Tom Cruisein 2012’sJack Reacher film. Cruise would later reprise the role in the 2016 feature film sequel titledJack Reacher: Never Go Back. With Amazon’s Jack Reacher series being episodic and on a different platform, it makes sense that they went with a different actor.

This is definitely a different change of pace for Amazon, as the streamer isn’t afraid to greenlight shows or movies that would otherwise be too graphic for television or even other streaming platforms.Amazon’sThe BoysandInvincible, for example, are both superhero genre shows that are incredibly violent and dark, with plots that serve as social commentary on society.

Hopefully, the new Jack Reacher series can deliver.Amazon has some hidden gemson its platform, but it will evidently need some more content if it hopes to hold its own against its competitors Hulu and Netflix. Amazon Prime Video also doesn’t have too much to lose though, as they also have Amazon’s shipping services as a huge monetary backing for the company. Regardless of how it turns out,Reacherlooks to be a nice weekend watch for many, especially for those who’ve been waiting for a new action show to come out.
